Effects of Bamboo Stepping Exercise on Blood Pressure in the Elderly

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bamboo stepping exercise on the blood pressure of the elderly. This study was performed for 8 weeks.

Methods : Twenty five people aged 65 and over were enrolled in this study. There are 16 people in hypertensive elderly group and 9 people in the normal blood pressure elderly group. Stepping on semicircular bamboo was performed for 20 minutes. It was carried out three times a week for 8 weeks. The blood pressure was measured 3 times before and after 8 weeks of exercise. And the mean values of three measurements were compared and analyzed statistically.

Result : The systolic blood pressure of the hypertensive elderly group decreased significantly from 134.68¡¾21.11 to 119.95¡¾18.18(p<.005). The diastolic blood pressure of the hypertensive elderly group decreased from 70.2¡¾10.55 to 66.12¡¾9.83, but there was no significant difference. The systolic blood pressure of the normal blood pressure elderly group decreased significantly from 127.25¡¾18.73 to 115.51¡¾19.02(p<.05). The diastolic blood pressure of the normal blood pressure elderly group decreased from 72.62¡¾11.34 to 68.25¡¾12.04, but there was no significant difference.

Conclusion : The bamboo stepping exercise for 8 weeks was able to reduce the systolic blood pressure of the elderly effectively. These days, lifestyle modification such as daily exercise is needed to control the blood pressure of the elderly. We hope that the bamboo stepping exercise, which is easy to perform without being restricted by the place and time, will be spread as a part of the health policy of the elderly.
